Tamil Nadu offers some of South India's most scenic driving routes. Whether you're heading to misty hills or ancient temple towns, here are five trips worth doing.
1. Chennai → Pondicherry (160 km)
The ECR (East Coast Road) drive to Pondicherry is arguably the prettiest drive in Tamil Nadu — ocean on one side, manicured resorts on the other. 3 hours, and you're in French-colonial Pondy.
2. Chennai → Ooty via Coimbatore (570 km)
A longer journey but massively rewarding. The Nilgiris tea estates, the toy train view from the road, and Ooty's botanical gardens make this an overnight trip worth every km.
3. Chennai → Madurai (460 km)
The Meenakshi Temple and the city's chaotic energy make Madurai one of South India's must-visits. The NH38 is fast and comfortable.
4. Chennai → Tirupati (150 km)
One of the world's most-visited pilgrimage sites is just 2.5 hours from Chennai. Perfect for a day trip or overnight stay before the darshan.
5. Chennai → Kodaikanal (490 km)
"The Princess of Hill Stations" sits at 2,133 metres. The ghat roads are stunning (and steep), making a professional driver essential. Best visited March–June and September–November.
